It Started with One Question
In 2009, Dr. Sharona Ross sat in her home in Tampa, Florida, and did what surgeons rarely have time to do, she stopped and asked a question. Why were so few women choosing surgery? Why were so many brilliant young women looking at the field and quickly turning away? Why are there not others like her in surgery?
She already knew the answer. Surgery had a reputation: aggressive, male-dominated, unforgiving of anyone who dared to also want a family or a life outside the OR. That reputation wasn't just unfair. It was costing medicine an entire generation of gifted surgeons. So Dr. Ross decided to do something about it, beginning with the only space she could control: her living room.

What once fit inside a living room now fills conference halls in Tampa, Florida. Today, the International Women in Surgery App and Symposium bring together high school students, college students, medical students, residents, surgeons, researchers, innovation and healthcare leaders from around the world who believe surgery becomes stronger when more women are part of shaping it.
